- Abstract:Biodgradable shape memory polymers (SMPs) as the third generation of biomaterials are attracting increasing attentions. Although quite a few SM behaviors have been investigated, the relevance of thermal property and interface to SMPs is not available so far. In this work, incorporations of three synthesized block polymers as switching phases into poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) construct different SMPs. PCL-PEG -PCL/PLLA recovers original shape in 104 s at 55◦C, P(CL-LA)-PEG-P(CL-LA)/ PLLA restores original shape at 86 s, and shows higher shape recovery rate; however the temporary PLLA-PEG-PLLA/PLLA shape cannot turn back any more. The thermal property is a leading role. The SMP with good thermal property releases the elastic energy at transition temperature, breaks the crosslink point and drives the shape change. The interfacial adhesion is a supporting role which is favorable to transfer the elastic force between the switching phase and the fixing phase. The two roles can make a wonderful play of SM together. So establishing generally applicable tools to control SMPs is practical meaningful when developing these materials for possible applications of medical commodity, smart packing and soft actuator.
