- Abstract:Conductive hydrogels for sensing underwater face significant challenges, including insufficient mechanical stability due to swelling, limited signal output due to ion diffusion and high dependence on power supply. In the work, a conductive hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/poly[4-(methacryloxy) ethyl-1-benzoic acid (MMBA)/ vinyl acetate (VAc)/ sodium p-styrene sulfonate (SSS)] is prepared via the combination of free-radical polymerization and solvent exchange-induced microphase separation. The synthesized MMBA reinforces the mechanical stability of hydrogel, the hydrophobic VAc segments contribute to molecular aggregation and form hydrophobic barrier that restricts water molecule penetration and enhances the mechanics properties, and the SSS as conductive medium is immobilized within the hydrogel network to realize stable underwater sensing. The hydrogel demonstrates excellent mechanical stability (tensile strain up to 800 %, tensile strength of 2.89 MPa), anti-swelling property, and high strain sensitivity (GF = 2.67) and rapid response (0.287 s). It exhibits exceptional strain-sensing capabilities and reliable compression-based communication in underwater environments. The conductive hydrogel can be integrated into a self-powered device for monitoring underwater body motion. Moreover, it displays solvent-induced optical response, enabling the writing, rewritten, erased and encryption of information. The versatile hydrogel, adaptable to diverse environmental conditions, represents significant advancement in the development of sensing devices for broad practical applications.
